Tattoos inspired by nature, shaped by tradition.

My tattoo work pulls from neo-traditional and Japanese-style  tattooing, blended with natural elements—animals, florals, movement, and seasonal color. I’m drawn to designs that feel balanced and intentional, with strong foundations that hold up over time. Each piece is created with the body in mind: how it moves, how the design flows, and how it will live with you years down the road. No two tattoos are exactly the same—and that’s the point.

tattooing process

From your unique idea to healed art.

My process is designed to feel clear, comfortable, and collaborative—so you always know what’s happening and why.

STEP ONE

Share the vision for your new tattoo.

Whether you have a fully formed idea or just a feeling you want to capture, this is where we start. You can share references, placement ideas, or simply what’s drawing you toward the piece. We’ll build from there.

STEP two

We refine the concept together.

We’ll talk through the design, flow, placement, and scale—making sure the tattoo works with your body and will age well over time. This is a collaborative step, and your comfort and confidence matter here.

STEP THREE

Book your appointment.

On appointment day, you’ll walk into a clean, welcoming space that’s ready for you. I’ll have multiple stencil sizes prepared so we can dial in placement together before we begin. You’ll know what to expect, you’ll have space to ask questions, and then we start the work—at a pace that feels right.

from our clients

My chair is always open.

Every tattoo comes with a story. I’m grateful to the people who’ve trusted me with theirs—and for the conversations, moments, and repeat visits along the way.

"Such a great tattoo shop! Josh is amazing- highly recommend. He's very patient, kind, and always wants to make sure you're comfortable and happy with his work. If you go, I would request him for sure! I've gotten two tattoos by him and I LOVE them."

Frequently Asked Questions

Looking to work with a tattoo artist in Bozeman on your next piece? Here are a few answers to your questions.

Do you take walk-ins?

Yes, on select days we offer Walk-in appointments at Better Days Tattoo & Piercing. Walk-in tattoo appointments are first come, first served. Give us a call for current days and hours.

Do you OFFER FLASH TATTOO DAYS?

I do have available flash designs, including pieces inspired by nature, traditional tattooing, and Japanese influence. I’ll be adding flash work to the site soon, but you can also keep an eye on Instagram for newly available designs and openings.

How far out are you booking?

Booking timelines vary depending on the project, season, and availability. Smaller pieces may have shorter wait times, while larger or custom work may book further out. Reach out through the inquiry form and I’ll give you the most accurate timeline possible.

What tATTOO styles do you specialize in?

I specialize in neo-traditional and Japanese-inspired work, with a focus on nature themes—animals, florals, and seasonal imagery. Each piece is tailored to your vision and how it'll age.

Can you help refine my tattoo idea?

Absolutely. Email is the best way to reach me for booking inquiries, questions, or project ideas. This helps me keep communication organized and respond thoughtfully when I’m not tattooing. The consultation is where we shape your concept, talk through placement and flow, and make sure you're confident before the design phase begins.

How do deposits and reschedules work?

A deposit holds your appointment. Reschedules are handled case by case. Reach out if your date needs to shift, and we'll work something out. Yes. A non-refundable deposit is required to secure your appointment. $50 deposit for small to medium-sized tattoos and $100 deposit for large-scale work. Your deposit goes toward the final cost of the tattoo once the piece is completed.

WHERE IS YOUR TATTOO STUDIO LOCATED?

I am currently tattooing at Better Days Tattoo & Piercing Studio in Bozeman, MT. The studio is located off U.S. Highway 191 near Albertsons.

Meet Josh Maierle

"I didn’t come into tattooing through a straight line—
and I think that shows up in the way I work."

Before tattooing full-time, I spent years drawing, painting, and learning through repetition—on fake skin, on myself, and eventually in a shop environment where I learned what actually works on the body and what lasts over time. I didn’t have one single mentor. Instead, I learned from many people, a lot of critique, and a lot of showing up ready to work.

My style leans toward neo-traditional and Japanese influence, with a strong pull toward nature—animals, florals, seasons, and the landscapes we live in. Living in Montana has shaped not just what I draw, but how I think about tattooing: slower, intentional, and rooted in something personal. What matters just as much to me as the artwork is the experience. I show up early. I prepare. I make space for conversation, questions, and collaboration. Tattooing is vulnerable—it should feel respectful, calm, and considered. My goal is for you to leave not just with a piece you’re proud of, but feeling grounded, heard, and more like yourself.
